What it is
Semaglutide is a long-acting synthetic analog of GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1), a hormone naturally released by the intestine after eating. It binds the GLP-1 receptor with high affinity and is structurally modified to resist degradation, allowing for once-weekly dosing in its pharmaceutical form.
Pharmaceutical history
Developed by Novo Nordisk. Approved by the FDA in 2017 for type 2 diabetes (brand name Ozempic) and in 2021 for chronic weight management (Wegovy). Oral and injectable forms exist; this vial is for reconstitution and subcutaneous use.
How it works (simply)
- Slows gastric emptying — food stays in the stomach longer
- Acts on appetite centers in the brain — reduces hunger and food noise
- Improves insulin response to meals and reduces glucagon
Why customers ask about it
Sustained, significant body weight reduction in clinical trials (typically 10–15% over 60+ weeks in non-diabetic populations on the highest doses). Often the first thing a customer asks for when their goal is fat loss.
